"Sugar Babies"

Materials

Collage, Fibers, Watercolor, and Colored Pencil

Date

August 2024- January 2025

“Sugar Babies” is a multi-medium collection of work inspired by the “Women as Dessert” metaphor proposed by Caitlin Hines in her essay, “Rebaking the Pie: The Women as Dessert Metaphor.” This collection is a reaction to the commodification and objectification of the female body within the Hollywood film industry. Women have often been both consciously and unconsciously associated with dessert throughout history. Both on a domestic and a sexual level, the feminine identity has been interlaced with the idea of the “sweet” often perpetuating the sexualization of our bodies. “Sugar Babies” is a cheeky critique of the way in which the feminine form is represented in American Film and is a means of subtle, yet very colorful, advocacy against this phenomena.
