Acrylic Paint, Water Color, and Collage

"Fishy Fishy" is personal expression of the body image and beauty standards historically and modernly inflicted upon young women for centuries. This piece was made with a combination of acrylic paint, water color, and collage. The main character here is a female fish trapped in a glass bowl with the inability to see past its barriers. In her eyes, there is nothing else out there, no other option than to be confined to the prison of her environment and become what society has deemed appropriate; a "normal" fish. Her character design reflects her awkwardness and the uncomfortability she experiences in her own body and surroundings. The vast contrast in drawing style and design between our main character and the fish floating above her alludes to her body being atypical. The other more realistic fish, however, fit the expectation of what society, and many of my viewers, have deemed an acceptable rendering of a fish. Rather than viewing the bowl as a trap, these fish have an heir of comfortability and are perfectly at home in their territory oblivious to the struggles of our main character.
